Godhadi is a traditional Indian quilt, made by the rural women of India. Its a lofty blanket originated from the traditional weavers of the country. All the intricate work is done by women, as it had been for centuries. Its impressive that how these craftswomen respect the past while nodding to the future.
Godhadi is basically a Maharashtrian word given to the hand stitched quilt. In various part of the country the quilt has established its essence in the very appreciative art forms and designs.
For ex. In Gujarat, Rajasthan and the north part of the country it is called "Gudri" .
In the east part of the country it is called "kantha".
Making process of Godhadi :
Two navvari sarees, may be more, a filler (according to your requirement) are sandwiched and then all the layers are stitched together with hands and eventually the quilt becomes hand stitched.
Now the variety comes under the designs.
Sometimes various colour sarees are cut into pieces and joined together to form a beautiful design.
In another case the sarees are cut into square pieces and joined together to form a single layer and the other layers consecutively. This type of design is called as patch design.
Addition of filler material Increases the thickness and adds a warm feeling to the quilt.
The stitching patterns also vary according to the imagination and desires of the weaver.
Godhadi is basically a simplified quilt in design and in texture as well as compared to the other of it's kind. This is the fact that makes it multipurposed and all seasoned.
